Chapter Seven

Jag loved watching Destiny coming apart in his arms. Her screams were as deafening as they’d been the night before. Listening to her pleasure was much preferable to the sound of terror in her voice. She felt so delicate in his arms and the level of trust she was giving them was staggering. He’d expected her to become very emotional about the idea that she wasn’t on Earth anymore, but so far she’d handled it with grace. It was going to take a while to tell her everything and she was wise enough to know to take it in small amounts. That’s why she had stopped them earlier. She was going to make a perfect counterpart to them when he and Rock decided to ascend to rule. He paused for a moment. Since when did I want to ascend? Before now, he and Rock hadn’t wanted to take on the responsibility they’d been born to. With Destiny between them, he felt as though he was finally ready.

Destiny seemed very practical and understanding. She would understand that it was in her best interests to stay here and safe until their return. He watched as Rock adjusted her skirt and lifted her up into his arms. This time she went without a peep of complaint. Her head rested against Rock’s shoulder. She reached out and wiggled her fingers at him. Jag took the hint and entwined his fingers with hers so she could hold his hand as Rock carried her. Perhaps we should have a Cha’an before we leave?

He wanted to push away that thought, but it circled around his mind as they walked. Publically claiming her would keep her safe, but the entire village had watched out for his sister and it didn’t save her. What would I do if she was taken? What if we couldn’t save her? Old panicked thoughts pressed against him, but he knew that Rock would fight as hard as he would to save her. As would the other warriors. He wasn’t alone any more, but he wasn’t going to let her take any chances either.

From now on she would have to stay with either him or Rock and when they left to patrol the outer areas, then one of the warriors would stay with her. They could restrict her explorations. Perhaps it would be best if she stayed inside the stone walls. They would only be gone a week or so. There was a lot for her to learn and keep busy with around their home. He’d every intention of indulging in her body as often as possible before they left.

He thought about going on patrol and returning to Destiny. His mental image of her was with a large, rounded tummy where their child safely grew. Deep in his chest he knew it was right. She would be the mother of their children, and she would fight to protect them as fiercely as she’d fought to protect herself. Could we have wished for a more perfect Atan?

Her fingers grew slack in his hand and he realized she must’ve fallen asleep.
